Charlie De Gives Back To His Audience - July 28, 2008

Many years ago during Charlie De’s young career he recalls his father saying someday you have to give back to your audience what you’ve taken from them. Charlie really never quite understood what his father was trying to say. Charlie’s father-in-law suffers from Alzheimer's and although he seems quite happy Charlie found that his music made his father-in-law perk up, smile, sing and began dancing. What a gift, isn’t it nice to see a person who is suffering from a disease that takes away a person’s dignity, actually enjoy themselves. There are several major Universities that are doing research regarding this dreadful disease. St. John’s University in New York has been using music and other programs to complete a study that is proving the music can decrease violent episodes. Charlie was totally unaware like most other people that there was a need for such a service. Charlie decided to do something about it and has been performing for the elderly residing in nursing homes, rehabilitation centers, assisted living facilities. And to give back as per his father’s words, which now make sense. Charlie said “It’s not about money, it’s about helping others. To see the faces on these people is worth more then any amount of money. To be able to give them comfort and perhaps stir up happy memories that they’ve forgotten about is so fulfilling. I once was told by an elderly gentleman at one of the facilities… you’ve taken 50 years off my age, I remember dancing to those songs with my wife who past away years ago.”
Charlie De went on to say “Thanks Dad for those words of wisdom, I’ll never forget them.” In Loving Memory of Charles P. DeGeso Sr. who always gave back to his audience.
